Based on the evidence collected throughout this project, I call on UMSL leadership, the Campus Police Department, Residential Life, and Student Affairs to work collaboratively to prioritize the following improvements because of the following.
The findings in Safe Steps After Dark make it clear that student safety at night is a must, becoming an urgent and thoughtful priority at UMSL. Through firsthand survey responses, research from scholarly sources, and observations of the campus “daylight vs dark”, shows that the message students don't consistently feel safe on campus at night. Which is simply a sense of discomfort, but a possible threat to students' well-being, academic, and any other participation they have at UMSL. Students should feel protected as they travel through the campus. Whether leaving from evening classes, locating study areas, or simply walking around.
After creating the best version of a awareness creating website, I call for UMSL improvement in the police departments, residential life, and to hopefully work together to prioritize students' safety and improvements. Throughout this project, I noticed that the number of students felt unsafe because of the lack of security presence. Leaving the question of wondering wheres umsl personal dedicated police patrols are? Obviously, creating a safer feeling, but most importantly, the feeling of being secure. Improvements in nighttime patrol visibility and an expansion of shuttle transportation hours are not unrealistic, but far from it.
